NYC restauranteur Keith McNally bans him from Balthazar, calling him “abusive” and a “tiny Cretin of a man.”

GRAYDON CARTER, the former Vanity Fair editor, and current editor of Airmail magazine, had a lunch reservation at my restaurant, MORANDI yesterday.
It was for 12 people at 1pm. Because Mr Carter's a restaurateur himself, my chef, manager and floor staff were eager for the lunch to go perfectly for him. Extra staff were brought in to help with service, and 2 tables of 6 were meticulously set up and ready for Graydon Carter by 1pm. Only he didn't show up at 1pm. At 1:30 Morandi was packed and people were waiting for tables, but Mr Carter's 2 tables of 6 remained empty.
Around 2pm Graydon Carter's assistant called to say Mr Carter wasn't coming, but the celebrated editor had forgotten to call and cancel. At 2:10 the 2 reserved tables were broken down. By then, Morandi was emptying out and no one needed a table.
By forgetting to call and cancel his party of 12, Mr Carter had upset the equilibrium of the restaurant, and cost the servers money in tips. (And had cost Morandi money too.).
Graydon Carter had done this very same thing before. Once at Minetta Tavern and twice at Balthazar.
Perhaps, being something of a social bigwig, Mr Carter thinks he is above having to cancel restaurant reservations. Perhaps.
But I'll tell you one thing. The fancy Fucker will never be allowed to make a reservation at one of my restaurants again. Never.

He's one of the most annoying cunts ever to grace late-night television. Craig Ferguson was so much better. He's a Brit, but he's been living in America for 30+ years, is a naturalized citizen, and understands American Pop culture better than this asshole.
By the way, Corden single-handedly ruined The Prom for me.

On a recent episode of “The Late Late Show,” Corden revealed he only washes his hair once every two months as he reignited the never-ending debate over celebrity hygiene — or lack thereof.
Corden, 43, talked about how Los Angeles residents were advised to spend as little time as possible in the shower in a bid to preserve local water supply.
The talk show host had trouble getting his head around the fact that the average shower lasts around 10 minutes, as his take much less.
“I’m in and out [of the shower] in a solid three or four,” he said of his own bathing routine.
“I use soap, but I don’t wash my hair. I wash it every two months,” Corden responded. “That is a true story.”
The Brit was instantly called “dirty” and “nasty” by staffers, prompting Corden to defend his showering habits.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | October 18, 2022 2:18 AM |
What shows his true entitlement is him not giving a fuck when he's making a scene in public! He knows that people have cameras and/of access to social media, and the behavior is going to be leaked, and yet he still behaves like a bloody TWAT! It's baffling.

Never understood his appeal. He’s unattractive and grating. The bit where he knocks on the dressing room doors to reveal the guests for the night is lame and a waste of time. Which I suppose is the point. As is having all of the guests come out at the same time which means they have to vie for his attention. It always seemed rather GoTish to me. Most of the so-called celebrities have nothing in common save for having a project to promote and they often appear confused as to who he’s talking to. And almost ALL of them look like they would rather be anywhere else. Show biz is hard.

I know nothing about Corden as a person except this, and this is enough.
People who treat service workers like slaves are the worst class of human being. The same kind of person as Donald Trump, who hires construction crews to build skyscrapers with his name in gold on them and then refuses to pay the people who risked their lives walking on scaffolding 40 stories high. If I ran a network and learned baoit this type of behavior, I'd fire the person immediately. As a recognizable celebrity, they're an ambassador for your network everywhere they go.
I think some 'canceling' goes too far but I can't think of any excuse or explanation for anyone treating service workers like this other than 'horrible human being who has been given too much and appreciates no one.'

R84/R90 it's interesting that Andy did get banned from the Met Gala for the incident with Corden in 2018 and was only able to go back to attending the event this year.
Andy had pissed off Wintour by blabbing to the press about her pal Corden being drunk at the event. Apparently, despite being besties with SJP and other influential people Andy was unable to get Wintour to reverse the ban until recently. SJP even ended up skipping the event during Andy's exile as they had always attended it together.
James Corden must have had friends intervene on his behalf in addition to his apology.

Why are millionaires so cheap? They spend thousands on nannies, cars and houses, but expect to get free meals, hotel rooms and clothes. It's not the first time I've read a millionaire is too cheap to pay for his meal or tip the service people and comes up with a scheme to avoid paying.

Another anecdote from the main UK subreddit.
[quote]So funny story. I was on a train back from London and met 2 girls on the table next to me. Turns out they had just finished a show in London, and were runners for James C. His elderly female friend was there and 2 friends.
[quote]James spent the night getting more and more drunk, and when the girls had run out of the alcohol he liked, he screamed in one of their faces and slapped their hand away, demanded they "go to a shop and get some". The elderly woman came back as the group were leaving to apologise to everyone. They said he was the worst person they've ever dealt with
[quote]Sounds lovely. His friends were clearly really embarrassed by him they said.

Corden ruins that campy steampunky early 2010s action-movie take on The Three Musketeers imo. He was cast as the querulous loveable manservant Planchet, but it’s hard to feel for him even when the titular hero make him sleep outside in the rain with birds shitting on his head.

[quote]But Jonathan is skinny and probably gay and used to be pretty and talented, so of course DLers can be more forgiving of him.
As I recall, DL wasn't forgiving, but JRM has a history of being drunk at the airport and had some pretty high profile drunken episodes, so he clearly has substance abuse/mental health issues. Corden, on the other hand, appears to be a garden variety mean, arrogant little troll. There don't appear to be any extenuating circumstances - possible abuse, growing up in poverty, mental health issues - just a good old fashioned asshole.
Even though he's famous, everyone knows someone like Corden: not as smart or funny as he thinks he is, forever punching down while sucking up, arrogant with no real reason to be, etc. So it seems like poetic justice when someone finally calls out that person for what they are
by Anonymous | reply 143 | October 18, 2022 4:38 PM |
It's been so frustrating watching all the talented and charming actors from History Boys, Fat Friends, Gavin & Stacey, etc. getting far less work than this chode. His impression of a flamboyant gay man in Prom was hideous, and as a host he is utterly charmless. I wonder if his team/the network know more stuff will come out about him, because apparently he is stepping down from his show in 2023.
It's kept quiet, but Harvey Weinstein played a huge part in bringing his career to the US. Saw him in the Broadway show (for which he won a Tony) and got him a leading role in a biopic, playing that fat opera singer from Britain's Got Talent. The film was of course distributed by the Weinstein Company, and this was around the same time Weinstein started pitching him for hosting gigs before he got the late show. He also got him a role in Begin Again, also distributed by TWC.

Am a Brit who grew up watching Tubby wreck otherwise-entertaining telly, such as his stint as a host on footie quiz League Of Their Own (a post generally filled by awful ‘comedians’, admittedly).
As a child, I never imagined he’d get far enough to make a living, let alone a mint, or soirée with celebs and lead stage productions and star in big films. His success could not be more surprising or less warranted, looking at his early screen work. And it’s not even like there was a casting couch involved, because who the fuck would want him noshing them off? (was a procurer or something?)
Think of all the excellent performers and personalities from whom he’s stolen food and money and breaks. There really is nothing fair about this industry.

by Anonymous | reply 187 | October 22, 2022 12:46 PM |

I have a theory.
There are British media people/actors who come to the US and, if they don't perhaps "assimilate", are able to take the temperature of what's acceptable professionally and act accordingly. See Tom Holland as an example.
Then there are the ones for whom every American encounter is an acid-bath reminder that in fact we're not as impressed with the fucking accent as we used to be, thank so you very much. They freak out and start in with the "beneath me" bullshit.
See James Corden as an example.
It's probably not a coincidence that Holland's most popular role is him speaking with an American accent.

His hauteur is old movie star diva level who at least had the good sense not to show that side of themselves to the public. They would put on an apron and pretend to cook on a stove or enjoy themselves at a picnic. Their comments about the 'little people' were held for friends and confidents. Even Garbo kept her mouth shut entirely only referring to her fans privately as 'customers.'

Both of Corden's parents worked in the entertainment industry. Nothing prestigious, mostly gossip. But I wonder if, somehow, they got enough dirt going deep enough that their son can now can prop up his precarious talent with light blackmailing?
The whiplash on McNally reversing the ban, after going scorched earth on Corden, is weird. Balthazar is basic and perennially buzzy, however unexceptional in the NYC food world. McNally doesn't need Corden's business or forgiveness, but maybe something else happened.

One of the joys (for me) of being a restaurant regular, is that the staff know you- it's like eating at home without the work. They can become like your family. The expectation is that you will get excellent, knowing service, and in return you tip well and act like a human being.
I'm sure the owner left out a lot. Entitled, cheap tipper? If he can make Anna Wintour happy, who the fuck is James Fatty Corden?
by Anonymous | reply 230 | October 26, 2022 6:19 AM |
R228 Brooklyn boomers do worse than that. The other day I was in a diner and a woman not only sent her food back, but berated the waiter for not checking that her food was properly cooked, and then told him to instruct the cook to heat the food at exact temperature for an exact amount of time. When the waiter returned with the food, she said “this isn’t how I wanted it, but I’ll eat it anyway” and proceeded to audibly groan and complain to her companions for the rest of the meal. This same customer also yelled at a woman at another table for talking on the phone, despite the fact that she herself had been practically screaming the entire meal (there was a reason I could hear everything she said to the waiter).

That was probably the most resentful apology ever given.

r232 - he brought up the allergy after the fact which is suspicious. Fact is that it's impossible to get egg white off a yolk. It's enveloped egg white FFS. No sane person with an allergy would order an item with their particular allergen in it

I was curious, so looked a a few sites, and not worth posting since it's common sense. Evidently, there are people allergic to egg whites. The solution- don't eat eggs, or egg based products.

Corden is a fat talentless cunt and the wife sounds like a fucking bitch herself. One of those women who happily sit and watch while dearest hubby goes off on people. Egg allergy my ass. Dumb neurotic bitch was probably on some trendy diet.

Oh, Babs, what if I develop an egg allergy like Mrs. James Corden? What will I DO? And what will Mr. Egg Man do for a living? Oh, BABS!

Well, he was banned for good this time. Leo was at another of the owners restaurants today. No issues, shocker!
